CFP: Social Action and Student Engagement in the English Classroom

We’re turning 20 and it’s time to celebrate!

In October of 2016, TYCA-West is headed back to Nevada, the site of our very first regional conference in 1996. The theme for our 2016 conference is Social Action and Student Engagement in the English Classroom. As educators, we know that engagement is essential to student success. Recent data from surveys of both two and four year institutions, such as the Community College Survey of Student Engagement and the National Survey of Student Engagement, confirm the importance of facilitating concrete activities that link them to their peers and our increasingly globalized world.

As millennials, the majority of our students have grown up in a world inundated with information, where anything can be Googled at any time. This impacts the role of the professor, who is no longer the proverbial sage on the stage imparting knowledge, but who instead is responsible for creating opportunities for students to apply that knowledge to our world. When we frame information with an eye to current events, when we deliberately “edutain” with pop culture, when we discuss or write about politics or social trends, and when we guide critical thinking on current problems and offer reasoned solutions, we are creating those opportunities for engagement and application.

For the 2016 conference in Las Vegas, we invite proposals about the diverse teaching practices, projects, activities, lessons, or theories you use to foster student engagement in the classroom and/or in our society. This could include anything from a technique for managing student group work or lessons relating skills to current events to service learning or special projects that demand social action.

EXTENDED Submission deadline for proposals: September 15, 2016.
Please send proposals and any inquiries to tycawest@gmail.com.
